Large fowl are often described as the standard sized chickens you see day to day. However there isn’t a “standard size” for a chicken. Often coming in many different shapes and sizes, with at least one breed perfect to suit your needs..
There are light breeds such as the Rhode Island or Warren who are fantastic layers, medium breeds such as the Marans (good for eggs and the table) right up to the giant breeds such as Orpingtons and Cochins who are giant softies!
(Teddy our cochin rooster is a massive 46 cm tall!!)

We use this 5 egg rating system for our breeds to show you just how well they lay in summer!
(Decline in egg production over winter is standard due to daylight.)
The colour of the eggs gives a rough indication of the colour they lay.

Silkie
One of the most popular bantams due to their lovely softdown like feathers.
Called Silkies purely because of their silk like feathers, it is unknown where they
originated from. With a very gentle nature, silkies make fantastic pets or
“lap-
brilliant mothers to
any young chicks.

True Pekin
Pekins allegedly
were either
stolen from the
emperor of china, or imported and presented to Queen Victoria in the 1800’s. Quick to settle in, very tame and fantastic with kids, Pekins are usually our first recommendation for someone who wants a few pet chickens. They love human company.
We have many colours & variations (mottled/cuckoo) as well as frizzled(curly feathered.)

Bantams are smaller sized chickens around ¼ of the size of large fowl. Some are small versions of large fowl, other breeds only come in bantam size.
They are preferred for those with small gardens or a smaller budget. They lay smaller eggs which are just as tasty and make perfect pets as they are very tame.
Poland (Pollled/Polish)
Poland chickens do not originate from Poland. Some say they got their name after being popular with Polish nobles, others believe it was derived from the word ‘polled’ meaning no horn.
Either way these chickens look absolutely fantastic and ridiculous all at the same time with their huge crests. They can occasionally be nervous and flighty as they can’t see all too well but they are wonderful to watch pottering around the garden and lay very well. I would recommend them for more ‘mature’ owners as they need a
little more TLC.
We keep white crested Polands.

Cochins
Originally received by Queen Victoria in the 1800’s, it is said these birds first started the poultry fancy in England. Their feathers are beautifully soft and rounded making them perfect for duvets! (Not the chickens, their feathers!) And if flamboyant plumage wasn’t enough, cochins can also grow to a rather heavy 12 pounds. Think they’re not for those without a rather huge garden? You’d be wrong. Cochins are very lazy and
docile, and
Their large
Weight makes
it hard for
them to get
around.
A decent sized
pen and short grass
is all they need, just make sure they get enough exercise!
Generally considered a very friendly and loyal breed.
We have partridge cochins.

Adult/POL £25.
Maran
Originally from
France, Marans have
become exceptionally
popular due to their
ability to regularly lay gorgeous chocolate brown eggs. They are also good table
birds, though Marans like their food (don’t we all?) and so are best kept free-
They are usually very gentle natured and love to wander off for the day to explore, though the shake of a food tub soon has them back at your feet.
We keep Silver and Golden Cuckoo Marans
