Do you need a cockerel to get eggs?
No, hens lay infertile eggs throughout their adult life. You only need a cockerel to fertilise the eggs if you want to hatch them. The eggs you buy in the shops are infertile from hens that have probably never even seen a cockerel.
Do the eggs taste different to those in the shops?
Yes, eggs from a shop can be many weeks old by the time you get them home and eat them. You know exactly how old your own eggs are, they have a shelf life of 4 weeks from being laid.
How many eggs will we get?
This will depend on the breed you choose. Some prolific layers can lay one egg a day for most of the year. Most breeds lay less eggs in the winter.
Can you eat bantam eggs?
Yes, all chicken and duck eggs are edible; they only differ in size 2 bantam eggs are roughly equivalent to one large egg.
